What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Meeting interesting people.
Briefly, what does your typical day involve?
There is no typical day – One day might have me at the National Gallery where I’m a trustee, or overseas as next week when I shall be at a meeting in Como (Italy) called by the US National Academy of Sciences to discuss what can be done to limit any potential misuse of biological advances.
What is the most interesting thing you have done today?
Talk to Chinese visitors about the UK/China collaboration on science.
What is the most unusual thing you have done as part of your job?
Have lunch with the Queen in a party of twelve at Buckingham Palace.
What is the most unlikely place your job has taken you?
ChangChun in the extreme north east China.
What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?
When a seriously ill PhD candidate passed his exam.
What is the one personal ambition you still want to achieve?
See one of my own past students get to Fellow of the Royal Society.
When you are not at work what is your greatest pleasure?
Sunshine in a quiet garden.
What would the casual observer not guess about you?
That I am a very shy person.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
South West France.
