What is your main role?
I usually work in a design role on projects in the oil and gas, petrochemical and specialty chemicals sectors, but have also been involved with conceptual studies, construction projects, health and safety analyses, and project tool development.
What part of your job gets you out of bed in the morning?
Working in job where no two projects are the same, in an industry that produces tangible benefits for society.
Briefly, what does your typical day involve?
Process simulation of existing or proposed facilities, equipment design and specification, design and HAZOP reviews, co-ordinating with other members of the project team, making presentations to clients, and lots and lots of email!
What is the most interesting thing you have done today?
Consulted with a client’s engineering and operations personnel to identify the safeguards required to prevent a major incident at their facility, such as a fire, explosion or fatality.
What is the most unusual thing you have done as part of your job?
Helping prepare an insurance valuation for the total loss of a chemical plant.

What is the most unlikely place your job has taken you?
Roma in south-central Queensland, the site of the first oil strike in Australia.
What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?
Implementing a new engineering design data management system to optimise the delivery of major projects.
What is the one personal ambition you still want to achieve?
To write a best-selling novel.
When you are not at work what is your greatest pleasure?
Spending time with family and friends.
What would the casual observer not guess about you?
That I once worked as a professional lifeguard.
