Name: Phil Bowles |
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Knowing that the products we make help people live longer.
Briefly, what does your typical day involve?
Lots of communication! My group is a technical resource to the whole site, supporting 8000 people. Getting two people from different groups together to talk about a shared concern is my major focus.
What is the most interesting thing you have done today?
Designing a T-shirt for a colleague who just completed 20 years with Amgen.
What is the most unusual thing you have done as part of your job?
I once worked on a project in Norway to make vaccines for fish!
What is the most unlikely place your job has taken you?
I once flew from Los Angeles to London sitting next to Jon Voight.
What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?
If it’s not too corny, it would be landing this opportunity to work in California for the world’s largest biotechnology company.
What is the one personal ambition you still want to achieve?
I'm hoping one day to visit a little boy called Kenny, who we've sponsored for a while now. He lives in Uganda.
When you are not at work what is your greatest pleasure?
Hiking in the Santa Monica mountains, swimming in the ocean at Malibu, snowboarding at Big Bear mountain.
What would the casual observer not guess about you?
Despite living in California, I don’t yet have a therapist!
What is your favourite holiday destination?
The Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall. I’m reluctant to give any more details because it’s so nice and uncrowded there!
