New Engineering Diploma

Useful Information

New Engineering Diploma

In September 2008 a range of new qualifications will be available to students in a limited number of schools in the UK. Diplomas have been introduced by the government to provide young people with an industry-based, more skills orientated qualification that prepares learners for the world of work.

Diplomas are currently available at three different levels. The Foundation and Higher level diplomas are for students in years 10 and 11 (an alternative to GCSEs) and the Advanced level is for Year 12 Students (equivalent to 3.5 A levels)

Although the diplomas can be considered an alternative route to University the disadvantage at present is that many University admissions tutors do not feel the advanced engineering diploma contains a sufficient Maths base. If students considering chemical engineering as a degree are planning to take the Diploma we would therefore recommend they also take A level Maths in order to meet the high entry standards for chemical engineering degrees.

However, in September 2011 the Enhanced Diploma in Engineering will be made available and is the equivalent of 4.5 A levels. This Enhanced option will contain a sufficient Maths element to satisfy University entry standards.
