Choosing the right course
Choosing the right course
With the huge variety available, how do students choose the best Chemical Engineering degree course for them?
There is no easy answer to this question, other than to research the range of options available and choose the one with which they are most comfortable.
Here are some factors it is helpful to consider:
BEng/MEng
- Do they wish to study for a BEng or MEng degree?
Accreditation
- Students should ensure that the course they choose is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Only accredited degrees will count towards gaining Chartered status as an engineer.
Industrial Experience
- Do they wish to take a period of industrial experience as part of their degree programme?
- Things to consider are the length of placement desired (eg summer vacation, 6 months, or a year), at what stage students wish to take this in the course, and whether the university will assist them in finding a placement.
Optional modules
Do they wish to take a foreign language whilst at university, or to take management or an engineering specialism along with their Chemical Engineering programme?
Ability to switch between degrees
Does the university allow transfers between degree programmes?
Size
- Is the department large or small?
- Small departments may offer a more intimate learning environment where all students are known by staff.
- Large departments may be able to offer a wider choice of modules.
Location
- Do they wish to live in a town or a city?
- Are they keen to be near to industry or to have a more rural location for study?
- It is best for students to visit some universities to get a feel for which location will allow them to feel at home.
Accommodation
- Does the university guarantee accommodation to all new students?
- What standard of accommodation is offered and what does it cost?
- Is it close to where they will study, shops or where social events take place?
- Are there good transport links?
